Facing Cancer in Faith

Bottle of Tears, by Clare MulhollandA special Glasgow Churches Together service of prayer and support for everyone affected by cancer took place at 3 pm on Sunday 27 October 2002 at St Aloysius church, Rose St, Garnethill.

This creative and innovative service included:

  • quiet reflection on a passage of scripture;
  • two short addresses;
  • prayers led by sufferers, carers and cancer agencies;
  • congregational and choral singing;
  • liturgical dance.

Leaders of the GCT member churches or their representatives took part in the leading of the service and gave the blessing together.

This service was inspired by a similar event in Liverpool, where Professor Ray Donnelly has established a service involving the churches, those affected by cancer, the agencies and charities who help support and care for them, and the civic authorities.

Professor Donnelly, originally from Glasgow, is founder and president of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

GCT hopes to bring similar groups together in prayer here in Glasgow. An offering was taken up to cover the costs of the event and to make a donation to CHAS, the Childrens Hospice Association Scotland.
