Church leaders in Glasgow are uniting this weekend
to commemorate the anniversary of the death of
the city's patron saint.
A special service will be held in Glasgow Cathedral
on Sunday January 12 to mark the 1400th anniversary
of St Mungo's passing.
And church leaders hope the multi-denominational
service will be seen as a statement against sectarianism.
Lord Provost Alex Mosson will join the leaders
of seven main Christian churches to celebrate the
life of the man credited as being the founder of
Glasgow.
The special service has been organised by Glasgow
Churches Together and will be led by cathedral minister
Dr William Morris.
Roman Catholic Archbishop of Glasgow Mario Conti
will also take part along with the Scottish Episcopal
bishop Idris Jones.
Brother Stephen Smyth, of Glasgow Churches Together,
said:
"Sunday's event will send out a powerful message
that bigotry and intolerance have no place on the
agenda of the churches.
"It will show the commitment of the main Christian
communities to work closer together in partnership
for the good of the whole of Glasgow."
The service of prayer and song will be the first
in a year of planned events to commemorate the anniversary
of St Mungo's death in 603AD.
Several hundred people are expected to attend the
service at the cathedral on the eve of the traditional
Feast of St Mungo.
The seven churches taking part are Church of Scotland,
Roman Catholic Church, Scottish Episcopal Church,
Methodist Church, United Reformed Church, United
Free Church, and the Salvation Army. |
