Pentecost celebration in DennistounFrom the Baptist Union of Scotland website. On Sunday 23 May 2004, the Dennistoun area of Glasgow was the venue for a celebration by several local churches of the birth of the church and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It was an historic event in Dennistoun, which has seen its share of sectarian problems over the years, and the local churches were keen to send out a message to the community that despite their differences, all of the churches were united in the belief that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour and the one true foundation of the Christian Church. The service was organised and led by Rev Alan Hamilton-Messer of Dennistoun Baptist Church and took place in Dennistoun Blackfriars Church of Scotland. Seven different churches were involved in planning of the service, and readings and prayers were led by participants from several different congregations. About 250 people attended the celebration from approximately ten different churches in the area. Rev Clive Wylie of St Kentigern's Scottish Episcopal Church brought a deeply challenging message in which he reminded us of the need to be very clear about the Great Commission, and about the need to take the gospel message out from our comfort zone within the church walls and into the community. Alan and the congregation at Dennistoun would like to thank all those who have supported this venture in prayer and helped to make it a memorable occasion. |
